Master of Science in
Applied Mathematics

About

The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics Program is a graduate program designed to meet the growing demand for graduates with advanced analytical skills. The program’s primary focus is on placing graduates into high paying jobs in the private sector, although the degree is also suitable for graduates seeking employment as community college math instructors or those pursuing doctoral studies in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research or related fields.

The program is open to any graduate with a degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research or related field. Graduates with other math-intensive degrees such as Computer Science, Engineering, or Economics can apply if you have at least the equivalent of a minor in Mathematics.

Application Requirements Curriculum & Requirements

Application Requirements

An applicant must have a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics (or a closely related field) from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 based on the last 90 quarter or 60 semester credits.  A complete application portfolio includes:
  • a statement of purpose,
  • an official transcript,
  • a curriculum vitae, and
  • three letters of recommendation.
We recommend that at least one letter is written by a current or former professor who is familiar with the applicant’s academic ability.  If the applicant seeks a Graduate Student Appointment (see below), we recommend that one letter address teaching experience and potential.  Unfortunately, our program is unable to waive the application fee.

GRE scores are not required at this time. However, non-native English speaking applicants are required to document their English proficiency. Applicants may also email an unofficial transcript to math@ewu.edu for the purpose of evaluating equivalent transfer courses to satisfy prerequisites for the graduate courses offered.

Eastern Washington University is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty, staff, students, and academic program offerings and to strengthening sensitivity to diversity throughout the institution. Eastern Washington University is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer, and applications from members of historically underrepresented groups are especially encouraged.

Graduate Service Appointments (GSAs)

We anticipate having a limited number of graduate service appointments (assistantships) which include a tuition waiver and an annual wage of approximately $9,000 available for the upcoming academic year. These GSA awards will be awarded competitively based on academic potential and financial need. GSA awards are available for both resident and non-resident students. Decisions regarding GSA awards will be made during the January-April timeframe. Applicants are encouraged to have their application material submitted no later than December 31 in order to guarantee priority consideration. First- year graduate assistants typically aid a professor in the classroom with teaching-related tasks. Second-year graduate assistants may be assigned to teach courses as instructor-on-record depending on department needs. A detailed job description is available by request.
