The Ballmer Behavioral Health Scholarship

The Washington State Behavioral Health Workforce Development Initiative
The EWU School of Social Work is now accepting new applicants for the Washington State Behavioral Health Workforce Development Initiative scholarship (aka, WDI or Ballmer Scholarship) for the 2024-2025 academic year. This winter scholarship cycle is open only to the incoming Advanced Standing MSW applicants to the Cheney full-time and Spokane part-time MSW Programs.

The Washington State Behavioral Health Workforce Development Initiative’s goal is to expand the number and diversity of mental health counselors, social workers, and therapists in Washington State who serve individuals with severe mental health or substance use issues while significantly reducing student debt. Eligible master’s degree students may receive a maximum two-year conditional scholarship, up to $51,500 in tuition funding, in return for completing their practicum training and serving three years post-graduation in approved community or tribal-based behavioral health agencies.

The application is a two-stage process and is highly competitive. The best candidates are those able to complete their practicum education and make a long-term commitment to working in approved community or tribal-based behavioral health agencies after graduation. We strongly advise applicants to review the list of approved community and tribal-based behavioral health agencies within their area before deciding to apply.

To be considered, all applicants must complete the WDI application by the stated deadline and register and attend one of the two mandatory Information Sessions offered below.

Application Process

  1. Complete the WDI (Ballmer Scholarship) application by 11:59 p.m. (PST) on February 20th, 2024. Late applications will not be considered.
  2. Register and attend one of two mandatory Information Sessions. Applicants who do not register and attend an Information Session are automatically disqualified. Information Sessions will be approximately 1-hour in length; we ask that you please plan your time accordingly.
    • WDI-Ballmer Scholarship Information Session option #1: February 21, noon – Register
    • WDI-Ballmer Scholarship Information Session option #2: February 22, 5:30 p.m. – Register
