About

The Master of Science in Psychometry (MS) is a five-quarter program starting in summer and ending summer.  This hybrid program is designed for individuals who wish to achieve a position as a psychometrist; working in either a school or clinical setting. A psychometrist is skilled in the administration and scoring of objective neuropsychological, educational, and psychological test batteries under supervision of a licensed/certified neuropsychologist, school psychologist, or clinical psychologist.  

The program includes online coursework along with in-person (in Cheney, Washington) expectations. Students will be expected to have a schedule that allows them to be on the Eastern Washington University Cheney campus/area every Monday-Wednesday during the summer quarter and academic year quarters, recognized holidays and breaks excluded. Part of this time will be dedicated to practicum experience. A more definitive schedule will be provided prior to each quarter’s start. The program will work with you to secure a practicum site and has opportunities available in the Cheney/Spokane area for application of skills as part of the program.  Thus, being available to come to Cheney and/orSpokane Monday through Wednesday is a requirement.

Admission & Preparation

To be considered for the program, students must:

  1. Have a bachelor’s degree, in psychology, special education, education, speech pathology, or related fields, with the applicant’s transcript showing evidence of courses in research methods, inferential statistics, tests and measurements, biopsychology, and abnormal psychology from a regionally accredited University;  
  2. Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 from a regionally accredited bachelor’s degree-bearing institution or master’s degree

We adhere to a scientist-practitioner model that prepares students for practice as a psychometrist. The psychometrist is skilled in the administration and scoring of objective neuropsychological, educational, and psychological test batteries. The psychometrist may only perform duties under the general supervision of licensed/certified neuropsychologists, school psychologists, and clinical psychologists. The supervising neuropsychologist/psychologist provides technical and clinical guidance and uses the assessments and reports that the psychometrist performs and prepares to assist in diagnosing and preparing treatment plans and recommendations for clients. Psychometrists’ assessments and records are also used to advance the field by using the test data for research. Knowledge and skills are developed through integrated coursework, lab, and practicum experiences. Students complete a four-quarter sequential program of study, beginning in the summer quarter.

After completion of the MS and a minimum of 2,000 hours of testing, scoring, and associated administrative experience under the supervision of a licensed/certified professional, a graduate may elect to sit for the Certified Specialist in Psychometry examination.

Full participation throughout the web-conferencing activities and on-campus training is required to participate.

Students who successfully earn a MS in Psychometry from EWU should be able to do the following:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of key developmental and diagnostic concepts in psychology
  • Explain statistical methods used in assessment
  • Administer academic, personality, behavioral, and neuropsychological measures in accordance with standardization expectations
  • Score academic, personality, behavioral, and neuropsychological measures in accordance with standardization expectations
  • Summarize and communicate background information and assessment results in oral and written format
  • Articulate legal and ethical issues relevant to the administration, scoring, and interpretation of standardized psychological instruments

You will need to provide the following before submitting your application:

  1. Request an official transcript from the institution where you earned your bachelor’s and/or master’s degree. For the fastest result, please have the transcript sent directly to Slate.
  2. Upload a current resume
  3. Provide three professional references
  4. Participate in an interview (if offered)

All application materials must be received by the March 1 deadline for consideration of an interview for admission to the program. Candidates are required to apply for the Pre-Residency Clearance in Washington State through the Eastern Washington University (EWU) Certification Office during the first quarter of the program, which includes fingerprinting and background checks.

Certified Specialist in Psychometry Examination

After completion of this MS and a minimum of 2,000 hours of testing, scoring, and associated administrative experience under the supervision of a licensed/certified professional, a graduate may elect to sit for the Certified Specialist in Psychometry examination.

Students completing this program will have taken the requisite courses for the Licensed Mental Health Counselor credential in the state of Washington, but since the nature of the program is focused on assessment and rehabilitation intervention, students wishing to pursue this credential may have to seek additional applied experience specific to counseling to be eligible along with the post-master’s requirements.

There is also a 3,000 post-master’s hours requirement for the Mental Health Counselor license. Seeking credentialing after completion of the program is considered separate from the program and would be something students pursue on their own. This program provides training necessary for employment as a psychometrist under the supervision of a licensed/certified professional. For states that have a psychometry credential, you will want to follow up with your state board to make sure this program meets requirements.

Students wishing to pursue a doctoral degree following the completion of this program may elect to complete a thesis rather than research report as part of the MS, which will likely extend the timing of the program beyond the five quarters but is recommended in the case of plans to pursue future doctoral work.
