{"id":895,"date":"2022-01-13T21:23:54","date_gmt":"2022-01-13T21:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/?post_type=stories&#038;p=895"},"modified":"2022-01-13T21:23:54","modified_gmt":"2022-01-13T21:23:54","slug":"alternative-camping","status":"publish","type":"stories","link":"https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/news\/alternative-camping\/","title":{"rendered":"Alternative Camping"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Travel restrictions fail to deter Eastern\u2019s determined geologists.<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">C<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ovid-19\u2019s disruptions over the past year-and-a-half haven\u2019t just affected indoor learning at Eastern, they\u2019ve also upended many of the outdoor experiences that make higher education in the magnificent Inland Northwest so rewarding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Happily, organizers in EWU\u2019s geosciences program found a way to preserve perhaps the premiere event of outdoor academe: geology field camp. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">EWU\u2019s Geology Field Camp is an intensive, hands-on capstone requirement that allows budding geologists to take to the hills (and gorges and valleys and lakes and rivers) to sharpen their problem-solving skills amidst some of the most dramatic features of our ever-evolving planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_896\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-896\" style=\"width: 1004px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid wp-image-896 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2022\/01\/Field_Camp.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1004\" height=\"763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2022\/01\/Field_Camp.jpg 1004w, https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2022\/01\/Field_Camp-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2022\/01\/Field_Camp-768x584.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1004px) 100vw, 1004px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-896\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A canoeing excursion during EWU&#8217;s Geology Field Camp earlier this year.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Because such camps typically req<\/span>uire interstate travel and shared lodging, last summer universities across the nation cancelled their camps due to covid concerns. But EWU\u2019s Chad Pritchard,\u00a0associate professor and chair of geosciences, wasn\u2019t ready to pull the plug on Eastern\u2019s annual event.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Instead, Pritchard and his team put in long hours to create a 4-week camp that eliminated risky travel and adhered to best-practices for social distancing. Camp organizers realized early on that keeping students safe would necessitate foregoing the trip to Eastern\u2019s typical gathering place in Dillon, Montana. This year\u2019s\u00a0camp was thus held closer to home, where students successfully mountain biked, hiked, climbed and paddled to pursue investigations in semi-remote locations in their own backyard.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Staying local had the benefit of allowing other EWU organizations to pitch in.\u00a0A mapping project on Bonnie Lake, a lovely lowland body of water just south of the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, involved EWU\u2019s EPIC Adventures providing canoes. EPIC also\u00a0provided transportation to projects conducted at Tower Mountain on the Cascade Crest and Spokane County\u2019s historic Silver Hill Mine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">In addition to those activities, Pritchard\u2019s students also used drones and legwork to map 200 acres of land recently acquired by the City of Cheney for wastewater treatment lagoons.
