Poet Laureate Ada Lim\u00f3n<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s2\"> was among the luminaries that appeared before packed venues at the 25th anniversary of EWU\u2019s Get Lit! Festival, Washington state\u2019s longest running literary gathering and the university\u2019s premier literary event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">Lim\u00f3n, one of the nation\u2019s most acclaimed poets \u2014 and the first writer of Mexican descent to be honored as poet laureate \u2014 appeared alongside a diverse lineup of celebrated national, regional and local authors during the four-day festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">Audiences were treated to readings, writing workshops, craft classes, poetry slams, panel discussions, literary happy hours and more \u2014 all offered free or at a low cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cGet Lit helped me to see how lucky Spokane is in terms of its literary community,\u201d says Jordan Brown, a master\u2019s of fine arts student from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. \u201cI hope we can keep it going for future generations\u2026 It is not something to take for granted.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">There was certainly no sign of diminished enthusiasm at this year\u2019s fest. Lim\u00f3n\u2019s master class, for example, sold out in just two days. \u201cIt really shows that people are as excited as we are for the opportunity to learn from Ada,\u201d said author and Get Lit! Director Kate Peterson \u201914, in advance of Lim\u00f3n\u2019s appearance. \u201cClearly, lots of folks know what a rare chance they have to sit down in an intimate setting with the U.S. Poet Laureate to learn how to start a poem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s2\">\u201cGet Lit helped me to see how lucky Spokane is in terms of its literary community,\u201d says Jordan Brown, a master\u2019s of fine arts student from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. \u201cI hope we can keep it going for future generations\u2026 It is not something to take for granted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">In all, some 80 authors participated in 40 Get Lit! events. As an added bonus, this year, for the first time, Eastern students were able to attend any ticketed event for free.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI had a fabulous time,\u201d said Liina Koivula, an EWU creative writing graduate student from Olympia. \u201cThe energy was fantastic. Everyone seemed so happy to be there.
