{"id":1914,"date":"2023-07-11T17:03:43","date_gmt":"2023-07-11T17:03:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/?post_type=stories&#038;p=1914"},"modified":"2023-09-21T22:44:37","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T22:44:37","slug":"easing-the-path-to-service","status":"publish","type":"stories","link":"https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/news\/easing-the-path-to-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Easing the Path to Service\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p4\"><strong>A<span class=\"s2\">s a kid growing up<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s3\"><strong> in Blytheville, Arkansas<\/strong> \u2014 a small town about an hour upriver from Memphis, Tennessee \u2014 and later in Tacoma, Washington, EWU Police Chief Jay Day was always proud to embrace the values he learned from his dad, a service member in the U.S. Army.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s3\">\u201cMy foundation is discipline and integrity,\u201d Day says. \u201cMy dad raised us like little soldiers and instilled all those principles, which have served me well in my law enforcement career.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s3\">As the head of EWU\u2019s police department, Day \u201995 has continued to honor those who serve, including the Eastern officers who divide their time between police work and periodic deployments in the Armed Forces Guard and Reserve. In recognition of this support, Day recently received the U.S. Armed Forces Guard and Reserve Employer Patriot Award, an honor reflecting the commitment he has shown toward easing the path to service for his employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s3\">The award was announced at the EWU Board of Trustees meeting on Feb. 24 by Dave Millet, director of the Veterans Resource Center at EWU. Day, who is also an Eastern alumnus, was nominated by Deputy Chief Sean O\u2019Laughlin, a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s3\">\u201cIt was a complete shock and surprise, I wasn\u2019t expecting it but it was probably one of the top honors of my life, I should say, having grown up military,\u201d Day says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s3\">Military service was originally going to be his own career path, Day recalls.
