EWU will soon be in a position to help, thanks to recent state approval for Eastern\u2019s first-ever Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">EWU Provost Jonathan Anderson says establishing a four-year nursing degree program represents a pivotal moment for the university. \u201cThis program expands our offerings in the health sciences and continues Eastern\u2019s mission as a driving force for workforce development of our region and our state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Donna Bachand, the EWU professor of nursing and program administrator who was instrumental in establishing the program, agrees, adding that the timing could not be better.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-1742 img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/01\/Nursing-graphic-296x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/01\/Nursing-graphic-296x1024.jpg 296w, https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/01\/Nursing-graphic-87x300.jpg 87w, https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/01\/Nursing-graphic.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cThere is a critical shortage of nurses in the region, and Eastern aims to help increase capacity by graduating up to 80 new nurses each year,\u201d says Bachand.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Beginning this January, students can apply for admission, with an inaugural cohort of 40 students starting their studies the following fall semester. Another 40 students will be admitted in 2024. Most classes will be held inside the SIERR building in Spokane\u2019s University District. It\u2019s a location \u2014 squarely within the Health Peninsula hub for research, development and the advancement of health sciences \u2014 that will help to further strengthen EWU\u2019s partnerships with other health education centers in the area, officials say.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The program got a big boost earlier this year after Washington lawmakers approved a two-year, $6.1 million appropriation to help the university cover some of the costs of expanding its current pre-nursing offerings. Bachand says the bachelor\u2019s degree offering will open doors for Eastern\u2019s 200-plus freshmen pre-nursing majors to potentially stay and complete their four-year degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cMost of our pre-nursing students choose to come to Eastern for a reason.
