{"id":7092,"date":"2024-09-18T10:23:32","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T17:23:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/library\/?post_type=stories&#038;p=7092"},"modified":"2024-09-24T12:48:07","modified_gmt":"2024-09-24T19:48:07","slug":"improvements-at-your-ewu-jfk-library","status":"publish","type":"stories","link":"https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/library\/news\/improvements-at-your-ewu-jfk-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Improvements at Your EWU JFK Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>The JFK Library has undergone a transformation over the summer.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Returning students, faculty, and staff visiting the library can look forward to expanded resources, improved organization, greater access to collections, and more designated quiet study and collaborative spaces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many of the changes are in response to feedback from the campus community, including faculty who requested additional databases to support student-faculty research and experiential learning projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019ve already had positive feedback from patrons over the summer and intersession. We encourage everyone to check out the improvements, both physical and new online resources,\u201d says Ielleen R. Miller, library faculty chair and director of the School of Libraries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many of the JFK projects were years in the works, says Miller, adding \u201cthey were only made possible with the dedication of all of the library staff and faculty, and our fantastic student workers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As fall quarter gets underway, the JFK team would like to highlight specific improvements that library users can expect to see.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Easier Access<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Books are consolidated on the upper level of JFK, increasing access and browsability. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Curriculum Center collection remains on JFK\u2019s lower level.)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some books that were dated, or hadn\u2019t been borrowed in twenty or more years, were deselected,\u00a0 creating additional space to support current and emerging curriculum needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shelf signage is improved, enabling browsing by subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Building maps are\u00a0 redesigned making\u00a0 it easier to discover resources, services, books and materials, group study rooms and silent study areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"btn\" href=\"https:\/\/test-www.ewu.edu\/library\/floor-maps-study-rooms\/\">See the Floor Maps<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>eTextbook Program<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The JFK team worked with EagleStore to enhance textbook options to decrease costs for students. The library identified course-adopted textbooks in stock, and others that could be purchased in unlimited-use ebook versions. While the percentage of textbooks JFK currently provides is only around 17%, the total potential savings for students during winter 2023 though spring 2024 was $454,000. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"btn\" href=\"https:\/\/research.ewu.edu\/textbooks\">Learn more about this program<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Additional Group Study Rooms<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Usage patterns showed that students needed more study areas. After surveying underused library spaces, the team created two additional group study rooms on JFK\u2019s upper level, bringing the total to 27 rooms. The areas are volume-enforced and free of phone calls, talking or audible media use. In addition, noise-canceling headphones are available for checkout at the lower-level equipment desk in case library users need an extra layer of quiet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><b>New Database Access\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><b>New York Times via nytimes.com:\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Create an account for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> via their website.
