Recognition Societies

Named for the Northwest native perennial evergreen and the traditional name of the Eastern yearbook, this honors donors for their loyalty, recognizing support of three or more consecutive years, no matter the amount.

In honor of Eastern’s year of founding, this society recognizes supporters who annually contribute $1,000 or more.

Being recognized in the 1882 Society is simple! Make annual gifts of $1,000 or more.

Recognizes and honors individuals and families who, through their estate plans, have established a planned gift of any size to the Eastern Washington University Foundation. Gifts take many forms, such as a bequest through a will or personal trust or one of several charitable life income plans.

To join the Legacy Society, simply inform us in writing that you have included Eastern in your estate plans and provide us with one of the following:

• Copy of the pertinent provisions in your will or trust
• Copy of the life insurance policy naming the university as beneficiary
• Letter from your attorney stating that you have included Eastern in your estate plans

Named in honor of the presidents who guided the university to its present eminence. With one-time or lifetime gifts $25,000–$99,999, members of the President’s Society stand with the EWU president in addressing the critical needs of the university.

Sutton organized the first public school in Cheney, serving as the Cheney Normal School principal and professor of math and history.

The William J. Sutton Society recognizes and thanks members of the Eastern family who make one-time or lifetime gifts of $100,000–$249,999.

Mrs. Monroe was the first female chair of the board of trustees in the 1920s and an advocate for women in professional careers.

Members of the Mary Monroe Society provide Eastern with one-time or lifetime donations between $250,000 and $499,999. Through their gifts, members of the Mary Monroe Society:

• Enable students to come to Eastern without having to worry about how they will pay for it
• Further our global service efforts
• Start something big

Martin fulfilled his dream of a four-year college in Cheney after he was elected governor of Washington in 1933.

The Clarence Daniel Martin Society members provide Eastern with lifetime giving of $500,000–$999,999. Through their gifts, members of the Clarence Daniel Martin Society:

• Provide financial aid for deserving students
• Further our global service efforts
• Support our areas of greatest need

The transportation industrialist, Mr. Cheney contributed $10,000 to fulfill the vision of area citizens who had long desired an institute for higher learning.

With one-time or cumulative gifts of $1 million or more, members of the Benjamin P. Cheney Society stand with the EWU president in addressing the critical needs of the university: financial aid, service initiatives and a host of other essential priorities.
