Social Emotional Learning for Educational Equity

About

The Social Emotional Learning for Educational Equity (SEL-EE) program offers two certificates, one for undergraduates and one for working educational professionals, that are affordable and accessible. Through completion of a certificate, you’ll gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to implement Transformative SEL in the classroom. We emphasize CASEL’s SAFE approaches, which include elements of:

  • Sequenced and coordinated activities to build adult and student SEL in CASEL’s five competency areas
  • Active forms of learning through our engaging and fun workshops
  • Focused skill development for a continuum of age groups
  • Explicit instructional strategies through practice and feedback

You’ll learn how SEL may be a lever for equity within a comprehensive school-wide model. You’ll work closely with our knowledgeable instructors and cohort members to complete personal growth projects across the year. Courses are offered through a hybrid approach, with in-person and online options available.

What is SEL-EE?

Student Mental Health

Washington State formally adopted SEL standards for grades K-12, charging schools to establish and implement practices to support SEL and positive school climates.

Educational Equity

Every student should have access to rigorous and meaningful learning opportunities regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, language, disability, family background or family income.

A Transformative Program

Founded on an appreciation of similarities and differences, students can establish and maintain positive relationships in their classroom, school, home and communities.

Interactive Sessions

Our program includes in-person or online courses plus five engaging workshop sessions across the year, offered on Fridays and Saturdays (one in fall, two in winter and two in spring).

We are excited to announce that nationally recognized SEL trainer, R. Keeth Matheny (aka Coach Rudy), will join our instructors to launch this program! On Sept. 24 (4–8 p.m.) and 25 (8 a.m.–3 p.m.), Keeth will lead you through a moving, interactive and highly engaging workshop that will give you an inspiring vision for what a transformational SEL program can and should be. You’ll learn the basics of SEL and experience what it feels like when implemented well. This kick-off session is sponsored by the EWU Foundation through an Eagle Grant.

Following participation in this workshop session, you’ll meet with instructors across the fall quarter to dive deeper in content and establish personal goals. Space is limited — sign up in advance to join the 2021–2022 cohorts!
