What is an MPA?

Are you interested in graduate school and contributing to your community in a public-serving organization?

Public administration students learn leadership, government operations and public policy formulation/analysis for many managerial positions across local, state and federal government, non-profit organizations, tribes, educational institutions, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) or for-profit businesses. Graduates from this degree include chief executives, policy directors, project managers, advocates, consultants and executive directors.

An understanding of government operations and public policy formulation is important for many managerial positions, whether they are in government, non-profit organizations or for-profit businesses. The behavior of governmental agencies and the public policies they implement affect all of us.

From licensing to environmental regulations, governmental institutions make key decisions affecting society. From social services to public roads, the government authorizes, funds and delivers goods and services that are vital to the health of a community. Those who want to get ahead need to be able to influence, or at least anticipate, governmental actions. The Master of Public Administration degree is designed to prepare you for leadership roles in your organizations and communities.

The MPA or Masters of Public Administration, is a nationally accredited graduate degree for public-serving organizations such as governments, tribes, nonprofit organizations, NGOs, policy centers, and philanthropic institutions.

Like an MBA for the public sector, the MPA program is focused on developing students skills regarding policy, management, and leadership. And with our rolling admissions students can enroll asap!

Admissions Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university    
  • A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 from a regionally accredited, bachelor’s or master’s degree-bearing institution.
    Note: Applicants with a GPA lower than 3.0 may be admitted as a 10% exception. Check the Graduate Student Policy for scholarly ability exception policies.

Note: PADM 501 and PADM 503 should be taken the 1st or 2nd quarter in the program. All pre-service students without substantial work experience in public administration must enroll in PADM 603 for at least 5 credits.

An examination of budget process emphasizing bureaucratic politics, policy issues, alternative methods, and strategic planning techniques.

A survey of the structure and process of community development. Emphasis is on the role of planners and community development specialists as agents for change in the context of community growth.
