Scholarship Opportunities

The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) coordinates student exchange programs among 15 western states and member entities of the U.S. Pacific Territories and Freely Associated States. WICHE ensures access to higher education for all citizens of the western United States and territories. Residents of member states and territories are eligible to enroll in available programs of study outside their home states and territories at reduced tuition rates.

Eastern Washington University graduate programs participate in two WICHE programs: Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP) and Professional Student Exchange Program (PSEP).

Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP)

Student receives a tuition waiver to pay resident tuition (fees are additional).

Approved programs:

  • Communication Sciences and Disorders
  • Creative Writing
  • Social Work

No service to the university is required.

This waiver may be combined with a resident graduate service appointment (GSA) to provide the equivalent of a full nonresident tuition waiver.

Please review the following documents for detailed information about the requirements and conditions for these awards:

WICHE Information (Quarters)
WICHE Information (Semesters)

Professional Student Exchange Program (PSEP)

The student pays resident tuition (fees are additional). Funding is provided directly to the institution from the student’s home state to cover a portion of or all nonresident tuition.

Approved programs:

  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physical Therapy

No service to the university is required.

Most WICHE states have a service payback requirement for PSEP graduates. For more details, review your home state’s information at the WICHE website.

Students in the Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy programs are required to retain their home state residency in accordance with WICHE requirements for those programs. For more on this topic, visit the Residency page maintained by the Records and Registration Office.

Students applying for their Masters program who are interested in scholarships and would like to hear more about opportunities to serve their country should reach out to Linda Moody in the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) office located at 201 Cadet Hall or she can be reached at lmoody1@ewu.edu. Army ROTC is a training program built on developing future leaders for the Army. Students accepting a scholarship or committing to serving in the Army (either full-time or part-time) would commission as a Second Lieutenant upon graduation. Our newly graduated 2nd Lieutenants can expect a starting salary of about $5,100 a month with guaranteed pay raises each year of their initial service obligation (Note: Pay based on locality; Quoted pay based on Spokane).

Scholarships cover Full Tuition and Fees, $1,200 for books annually, and a $420/month stipend for the 10 months a year they are in classes. For more information you can also go to our website at ROTC.

Students contracted in the ROTC program can receive and compete for internships at various locations nationwide. Internships are in your field of study and give you hands-on experience in an Army environment. This can help you really see your future as an Army officer, whether on active duty (full-time) or serving in the Army Reserves or Army National Guard (part-time), your commitment results in a commission as an Army Second Lieutenant and a guaranteed job! Please reach out to Mrs. Linda Moody at lmoody1@ewu.edu for additional information on how these opportunities can fit your life. For more information you can also go to our website at https://inside.ewu.edu/rotc/

Graduate students may be eligible for some EWU scholarships, including program/major-specific scholarships. You can complete just one scholarship application to be considered for a variety of EWU scholarship opportunities.

Scholarships

EWU abides by the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) April 15 Resolution, which obliges EWU to allow admitted graduate students to consider all offers of financial support for the fall term through April 15. The resolution binds students to their decisions made or held in place after April 15.

The April 15 deadline applies only to acceptance of an offer of financial support (such as a GSA or WICHE). It is not a deadline for confirming enrollment after an offer of admission is received.

Acceptance of an offer of financial support made after April 15 is conditional upon resignation by the applicant of any previously accepted offer. A formal release by the program is no longer required.

For more information, contact Scott Eubanks at sreubanks@ewu.edu or 509.359.6566.

Graduate Service Appointments (GSA)

GSAs teach or support scholarly or creative activities. Students with a GSA work an average of 20 hours per week and may not accept any other employment or compensation from the university.

The following graduate programs do not offer GSA positions: Athletic Training, Addiction Studies, Child Life, Education Masters and Doctoral Degrees, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Music Education, Palliative Care Certificate, School Psychology, and Social Work.

For new students: In the GradCAS/EWU Application, the question that asks if you’re interested in a Graduate Service Appointment, select yes and upload any required documents.

For continuing students: Complete and submit the Departmental GSA Form by March 1 for the Fall term. (As of 2/1/2024: The Department GSA Form is currently down for maintenance. We hope to have this available again soon.)

Submitting your application early is encouraged. Some departments may also have deadlines earlier than March 1. Please review the GSA Information document for detailed information about the requirements and conditions for these awards:

Terms of GSA awards vary but they usually include discounted tuition, an hourly wage, sick leave, and discounted premium for optional health insurance. GSA discounted tuition, however, does not cover fees.

Because nonresident tuition is significantly higher than resident tuition, relatively few GSAs are allocated for nonresident students. Occasionally, a nonresident student accepts a GSA award with a resident-level waiver, since these awards are more widely available. In such cases, the student is responsible for paying the difference between the total charge for nonresident tuition and fees and the resident-level tuition waiver.

A portion of the total funding for Graduate Service Appointments is allocated for outstanding students who demonstrate financial need. Only Washington residents are eligible for a need-based GSA award.

To be considered for this, applicants must:

  1. Be a Washington resident
  2. Complete the FAFSA
  3. Apply for a Graduate Service Appointment

Graduate students with a GSA who are enrolled in at least 8 credits are eligible to enroll in a health insurance program at a discounted cost. The plan covers unlimited medical expenses, with a deductible of $250/$500 per benefit year.

GSA students are not automatically enrolled in this plan. GSA students must opt in by completing the enrollment form provided below.

This insurance plan generally provides coverage in case of a serious illness or injury requiring hospitalization. Also covered are doctor visits, prescriptions, and more, per the plan. This plan is separate from, and in addition to, the student health clinic services provided by the comprehensive health and wellness (CHW) fee. Review the plan documents for specific coverage.

Many graduate students seek graduate assistantship positions to help fund their education. At EWU, these are called Graduate Service Appointments (GSAs). They typically consist of discounted tuition, an hourly wage, sick leave, and discounted premium for optional health insurance. The discounted tuition does not cover fees. GSA positions are available for both resident and nonresident graduate students.

GSAs are awarded on a competitive basis to students of outstanding promise by an academic program or administrative office.

The majority of GSA positions are awarded for Fall terms. Occasionally, however, new positions become available throughout the year.

To look for available positions, contact your department/program.
